A Sister, A Friend

This past week I have had the pleasure of spending some quality time with my sister, Ashley. She flew out to Arizona with her new baby, Henry Louis and husband Lance for the whole week. My parents are out here as well (as they are "snowbirds").

In order to allow my sister Ashley and I run off and have some fun, our mom has been the true Saint this past week. She volunteered to watch all three grandchildren who range in age from 2.5 years to 6 months. WHAT A WOMAN!

Ashley and I are eight years apart, I being the elder. Most of our lives we have been at different crossroads - rarely experiencing life from the same perspective. It made for a very challenging relationship at times and I will take the blame for not being more patient, understanding, sympathetic and compassionate towards my little sister. I could have done a much better job at being a big sister to her. I will always regret that.

Something has changed in our relationship ever since we both had babies - we have something truly in common. We have something we can discuss, confide and deeply understand in one another and that is motherhood. Strangely, our motherhood bond has extended way beyond motherhood and I can plainly say she is not just my sister but she is my dear friend and I am so proud of her and I really like her. I don't just love her because she is my sister, I love her because she is my friend and I think she is the greatest.

Why Grandma Lola?

The ladybug motif was first launched in early 2000. It has transformed over time into many different variations.
One of the fun and challenging aspects of being a designer is to keep reinventing a style over and over. I enjoy that part of the design process. I like to see how many different directions I can take one concept. When I was studying design abroad, one of my professors stressed how important it was to work on "runs" until you are bone tired. It was the first time that I had taken that approach to heart. I have found it to be one of the best pieces of advice that I have ever received. Sketch it, sketch it again....sketch it fifty times more. Don't be so committed to your first concept. It is interesting to go back and look at some of the sketch runs that I have produced....you almost get kooky with your ideas but then you break into a rhythm and before you know it you have something to work with...unless you don't. That always stinks. It happens. It just isn't gonna happen that day. So you walk away from it and try again later.
I am still going back to our most popular motifs and trying to gain a new perspective on them. I think about scale, texture, stone placement, corresponding patterns, more or less detail. I love it.
Featured above is "Grandma Lola." Many people ask why this ladybug has that for a name. Well, when you go through designing and redesigning something again and again...it is almost like you have created an entire ancestory. So here we are today with "Grandma Lola."

Excitement is Contagious!

It was so exciting to watch Shaun White have so much fun during his turn on the half pipe during last nights Olympic Games. Watching Shaun react so estatically to his win was the highlight of my day. Enjoying his infectious smile and laughter while observing his screaming, cheering and waving arms made me all the more excited for the back to back Olympic Gold Metalist. Even more so, just watching this "uber-exuberant " snowboarder made me feel like a kid again. It was fun!
So many times when I watch sports the athletes are understandably so serious and you forget about the fun side of these games. I realize they need to "lock in" and concentrate on performing to the best of their abilities - but it sure is fun when you see an athlete physically happy and excited about their sport - like they really love what they do and they are really enjoying it.
I saw that last night in Shaun White and it was such a treat (and so whas finally getting to see the Double McTwist 1260)!

Nutrition Is In Da House!

The last month I have been enrolled in a nutrition class. I have always fancied myself as some what educated on the subject and have found myself to be both sufficiently humbled and gratefully appreciative for the wealth of knowledge that I have received the last few weeks.

I seem to be at somewhat of a nutritional crossroads in my life. Having turned 40 this past year, a mother of two and married to a man who's idea of a quick run is 25 miles - I am constantly asking myself; "Am I providing sound nutrition for my family?" Here I am, with the responsibility of meal planning for my family and I want to provide the best I can for them so that we all may thrive. I am concerned about what each of us is ingesting and I want the four of us to live optimally. I am finding myself wanting to take the neccessary steps to educate myself on eating a diet of only whole foods. It is a lot harder than it sounds and also a lot more rewarding than I ever expected. I began changing our home over to mostly organic foods about a year and a half ago. Now I am in the process of fine tuning those so called "organic" foods and trying to balance out all our meals so that we are well oiled machines! It isn't easy...actually it is overwhelming. So much so that tonight when I got home from my class I just didn't want to eat at all because my brain was on overload.

I'll work through it. The same way I did when I slowly transformed our pantry so that there were no more processed foods in our home...it blew my mind how many items we were eating that were advertised as nutritious, low fat, high protein, natural - while at the sametime not having our health in their best interest.

My husband and I saw the movie "Food, Inc." in the theatre last year and it confirmed we were on the right track with eating organically. I will be the first to admit that we are in no way perfect with our food choices but "getting stronger every day."

Some of the things that I have learned during my course that may interest you are:

1) The three biggests causes of inflammation are: Dairy, Wheat and Sugar
2) Soy mimmicks estrogen and is not good for us to eat unless it is in its whole state (ie organic tofu or tempeh)
3) Anytime you see the word isolate (soy isolate, whey isolate) it is NO GOOD! JUNK.
4) We all oxidize food differently
5) Storing, heating and freezing our foods in plastic is baaaaadd
6) The goal is to have all our hormones working together and are balanced (proccessed foods and chemicals disrupt this from happening)

Fine Tuning

Succulent spiralImage by duff_sf via Flickr

When we bought our home two years ago one of the many, many, many projects that needed tending to was the yard. I mean - like - there was zero landscaping. Art really appreciated the empty yard. When I mentioned landscaping - he was totally miffed. I was baffled at how he could think a yard full of rocks was an adequate expression of design!! Well, I got to work. I knew that I was doing this project A-L-O-N-E.

Two years later I am still at it. Planting in the spring, planting in the fall and when I can bare the summer heat out here, I will even plant in the summer. Not only is it time consuming but costly!

Now that I have gotten all my theatrical groaning out of the way, I will share with you how much I love it! How much fun I am having and how rewarding and relaxing it is to create our own little outdoor refuge. I am really starting to see results. Things are starting to grow up and out and even bloom and re-bloom!

I don't think this project is ever going to end. I keep finding another plant and another place to plant it. My mom laughs at me as she seems to have the same "condition" with her yard.

For all practical purposes, if I didn't enjoy working in our yard, then I probably would have deemed the yard completed about the same time that my husband Art did!

I suppose when you enjoy something you don't want it to end and you will find a way to keep fine tuning things. I am so happy to know that I will probably be enjoying my yard work for many, many years.

Besides, a few plants cost a lot less than shrink! :)

The Monday Mommy Blues

The Super Bowl is over
The laundry is high
The dishes are deep
I could easily cry

It's Monday morning
And to add to the fray
My kids haven't bathed in
one
no, two
no, three days!!

Where did the time go?
What did we do?
We took down the Christmas tree
Yes, in February
Does this frighten you too?

I am holding it together
You would never know at first glance
That I am quite overwhelmed with my circumstance

I love my life and my family too
But today I can tell you that
This mommy is having
The Mommy blues

Let's Go Dancing!

highland dance teacherImage by k4dordy via Flickr

When was the last time you went out dancing? It has been a long time for me! I did however, go out with some friends for dinner last night and the topic came up. One of the ladies is an actual dance teacher and she was sharing with us how interesting it was to watch her class evolve from the first day up today. She said the first day all the women seemed to uncomfortably roll their shoulders and giggle. Now, many months later they are all over the room having the time of their lives. She even mentioned that they will not let anything interfere with their dance class. One lady drove back down from Flagstaff just so she could make it to class. It sounds like a ton of fun. I just enjoyed listening to her verbally share the experience. Imagine what I would feel like if I actually went to the class! :)

It did get me thinking. I haven't danced - I mean really DANCED, in many, many years. I used to love to dance. It is such a healthy positive and happy thing to do for your body and your mind. No matter how old, young, male, female - dancing is good for the soul.

Freeze Frame

Due to my late afternoon Venti Nonfat Chai Latte I was up late last night trying to play catch up yet again. During one of my self imposed "time outs" I stumbled through various friends Facebook photos.

I came accross this photo in my friend Alicia's profile that made me stop. I froze. I mean it tuuuugggggged at my heart.

In all honesty, she and I are really aquaintances via a mutual friend. We are both mothers of young toddlers, both following our career paths and both about the same age. Alicia is a labor and delivery nurse. When I met her she was living in Flagstaff and making weekly commutes to a distant Indian Reservation in Tuba City to work on the reservation. I never told her - but I was facinated. I never thought to do such work in such a grand capacity. I thought about all the mothers, fathers and children she has helped and how many special ties she must have with the community and staff on the reservation. She told me that she would often take her son with her and they would stay for a week at a time and then drive back home (one week on, one week off sort of thing). I thought 'we are so different. Her life is so completely different from mine.'

The photo that stopped me in my tracks was taken while she was working in Haati during 2008.

I locked up.

She looked so content.

She looked like she was doing exactly what she was supposed to be doing and where she was supposed to be. I've never done anything like that - in that I just decided to take a trip to a place of extreme hardship and offer my helping hand for an extended period of time. I would imagine it would be a very emotional experience. I am guessing it would be a very sad, happy, rewarding, challenging, frustrating, confusing - but really so glad you did and you would definitely do it again kind of experience.

Her selflessness, her charity, her character, her sense of purpose is to be greatly commended. I suppose I am writing this blog because I know there are thousands of women in the world that are just like Alicia. I just want to tell you all that I think you are amazing. I want to tell you thank you. I want to tell you that I'd like to be a little more like you.
